Republican representatives respond to call to ban ZYN nicotine pouches

February 2, 2024

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - ZYN products have been a hot topic of conversation in congress. But what are ZYNs and why do some politicians want to ban them?

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a democrat from New York, called for a federal crackdown on ZYN nicotine pouches.

ZYN nicotine pouches resemble a sort of tea bag, and are used as an alternative for chewing tobacco. The product is not new, it was introduced to the American market ten years ago, but has become increasingly popular over the years.

Senator Schumer issued a warning to parents, saying social media is pushing the product to children, and has called to ban the sale of ZYNs.

However, many republican congress members believe this move is not only unnecessary, but a ‘massive’ government overreach. Wyoming Congresswoman Harriet Hageman says the issue of ZYNs isn’t really an issue at all, and certainly not the largest problem American youth are facing today.

“When we talk about the impact on our youth and whether ZYN is the biggest threat we face, the biggest threat we face is the failed policies of Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer. I think that’s why he has jumped on what is a rather nonsensical issue and tries to focus this on [ZYNs] rather than what we should be addressing, which is how do we close our border, as just one example,” she says.

Many congressional members have posted their responses to Schumer’s call to action on social media. North Carolina Congressman Richard Hudson posted a photo on ‘X’ of himself holding a pack of ZYNs, captioned in part, ‘Come and take it’. Congresswoman Hageman says the responses are appropriate, and that individuals have the right to choose for themselves.

She explains, “The government doesn’t exist to control our lives and micromanage us and create an anti-state. The government exists to protect our natural rights. We are the ones who get to make the decisions about what we do, and if it is a legal product, we are entitled to use that legal product,”

Congresswoman Hageman says that she and fellow republican representatives will continue to push for legislation she says the American people truly care about, including border policies and national debt.
