Hageman Votes to Protect Speech from Government Interference

March 9, 2023

Today Harriet Hageman voted in favor of legislation that would ensure federal employees are no longer allowed to infringe upon the 1st Amendment rights of American citizens. The bill summary states that “It is the policy of the Congress that employees acting in their official capacity should neither take action within their authority or influence to promote the censorship of any lawful speech, nor advocate that a third party, including a private entity, censor such speech.”

Rep. Hageman said, “Government employees must never again be allowed to suppress any American’s 1st Amendment right to lawful speech. This includes directing, requesting, or coercing third-party entities – social media corporations, for example – to violate our Constitutional rights. We have ample evidence that this suppression was happening related to many critical topics, including information on COVID-19 which was blocked and labeled as misinformation, but has now been verified as true.

“There is much more action that needs to be taken to protect the Constitutional rights of our citizens. The Protect Speech from Government Interference Act is a positive step, and I urge the Senate to join the House in passing this commonsense legislation.”
