In today's Indian and Insular Affairs hearing, my subcommittee interviewed multiple elected officials from the territories of American Samoa and Guam as we consider two unique bills that address the unique standing of these insular areas within the United States government.
Current ATF policy prevents the purchase of firearms by anyone without a permanent resident address. Yet hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Americans who permanently travel in RVs or frequently move as a result of military service are unable to meet this demand, and as such are deprived of their constitutional rights.
For too long, tribal identification documents have been valid forms of ID for airports, purchasing alcohol, and even to vote. Yet these IDs do not allow their holders to legally purchase firearms. H.R. 1709, the Tribal Firearms Access Act, will reconcile this, allowing members of federally-recognized tribes to use their tribal IDs for purchasing firearms under the Second Amendment.
We have long talked about the absolute disaster at our nation's border; this past year has shown that it is worse than ever before. Americans are no longer safe because of the failures and policies President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have created.
