Hageman Supports Resolution to Bring Our Troops Home from Syria
Today, Representative Harriet Hageman voted in favor of a House Resolution that would direct the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Syria. This one paragraph resolution would require our soldiers to be brought home no later than 180 days after its adoption.
Congresswoman Hageman stated, “Since 2014, United States military personnel have been stationed in Syria – despite no war declared by Congress and no clear exit strategy to return them safely home. There are approximately 900 soldiers still deployed in the region to provide support to the Syrian Democratic Forces – a group that was created with U.S. support - that are fighting ISIS.
“In August of 2013, then President Obama said that he would ask Congress to authorize the use of military force in Syria. He never did so. In September of 2013 Senate leaders drafted SJ Res 21—Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against the Government of Syria to Respond to Use of Chemical Weapons—to authorize the use of military force against Syria for up to 60 days with a one-time optional 30-day extension. This resolution was never brought to the Senate floor for a vote.
“So we are in Syria for almost 9 years, with no Congressional authorization, no plan for withdrawal, and no vision for what winning looks like. We cannot continue fighting endless conflicts around the world. The men and women of our armed forces deserve better than to be forever in harm’s way.”
