In today's Indian and Insular Affairs hearing, my subcommittee interviewed multiple elected officials from the territories of American Samoa and Guam as we consider two unique bills that address the unique standing of these insular areas within the United States government. I'm extremely grateful for those who travelled halfway across the world to share their views and experiences with Congress as we seek to create the best outcomes possible for our nation.
Current ATF policy prevents the purchase of firearms by anyone without a permanent resident address. Yet hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Americans who permanently travel in RVs or frequently move as a result of military service are unable to meet this demand, and as such are deprived of their constitutional rights. The Travelers Gun Rights Act, will fix this constitutional infringement by allowing those without permanent addresses to use a PO box or private mailbox address to satisfy this request.
For too long, tribal identification documents have been valid forms of ID for airports, purchasing alcohol, and even to vote. Yet these IDs do not allow their holders to legally purchase firearms. H.R. 1709, the Tribal Firearms Access Act, will reconcile this, allowing members of federally-recognized tribes to use their tribal IDs for purchasing firearms under the Second Amendment. I'm proud to announce that this bill passed out of the Judiciary Committee with unanimous support.
We have long talked about the absolute disaster at our nation's border; this past year has shown that it is worse than ever before. Americans are no longer safe because of the failures and policies President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have created. Tens of thousands of Americans are dying because of the fentanyl flooding into our country, and hundreds of known and suspected terrorists have tried to enter our country. We've caught 300 of them, but there's no way to know how many made it in.
Coal, oil, gas, and uranium are the only reliable, affordable, accessible energy sources that exist, and Wyoming and the United States is blessed to have them in abundance. Without oppressive government intervention, our nation could not only power the world, but eliminate the financial dilemmas Americans face between paying their energy bills and putting food on their tables.
