The pursuit of a "more perfect Union" between Native American tribe and the United States

June 7, 2023

This week, the Indian and Insular Affairs subcommittee heard testimony on 6 different legislative proposals that fall under the jurisdiction of my subcommittee. While the content of these bills varies greatly, the intent is the same: righting long-standing errors, oversights, and wrongs committed by the federal government, creating space and opportunity for healing, and honoring those who have suffered. One of the unique ideals of America is the ability to admit and own our past mistakes and find a way to move forward, to continue to pursue the concept of a "more perfect Union". It's my belief that the work done today moves us toward that goal, providing greater insight and opportunity for the United States to fulfill promises that it has made to our Native American tribes long ago.
