The struggles and opportunities of land consolidation in Indian Country

In 2018, the Department of the Interior estimated that Indian Country's 243,000 land owners held 2.5 million interests in just 100,000 parcels. This high fractionation of tribal lands makes investment and development highly complex, costly, and even impossible.
Resolving fractionation is not a simple process, but forging a viable path forward promises additional opportunities for America's tribal communities. Today's hearing and input from tribal leaders marks the first step towards providing a solution to a widespread problem facing Indian Country.
